Koprulu Canyon vs Green Canyon: Two Very Different Antalya Trips

Ask around the Antalya coast and you will hear two names that sound almost interchangeable: Koprulu Canyon and Green Canyon. They are not the same place, and choosing between them shapes your whole day.

Both sit inland from Manavgat, both are green and dramatic, and both are sold from the same beach resorts. Yet one is a fast, cold river you ride through in a raft, and the other is a still, deep reservoir you glide across on a boat. Confusing them is one of the most common mix-ups holidaymakers make in this corner of Turkey.

Koprulu Canyon: the rafting canyon

Koprulu Canyon National Park (Koprulu Kanyon Milli Parki) is a protected national park in the Taurus Mountains, north of Manavgat, near the village of Beskonak. Through it runs the Koprucay river, fed largely by karst springs deep in the limestone. Those springs are the reason the water stays so cold and clear, running turquoise even in high summer.

This is a living, moving landscape. The river carves through pine and cypress forest between steep rock walls, and it is the setting for the region's most popular adventure: white-water rafting. The classic run covers roughly 14 kilometres of grade II-III water, which means genuine splashy fun without the extreme risk of higher grades. It suits first-timers, families and groups, and most trips launch from Beskonak.

The canyon holds real history too. Spanning the Koprucay is the Roman-era Oluk Bridge (Olukkopru), a graceful stone arch that has carried travellers for many centuries. High in the hills above sit the ruins of Selge, an ancient Pisidian and Roman city with a famous theatre, reached by a steep mountain road. The long-distance St Paul Trail also threads through the wider region, making this a place for walkers and history lovers as much as adrenaline seekers.

In short: Koprulu is where you go to get on the water and get wet. If rafting is the reason you are here, browse the options on our tours page.

Green Canyon: the boat-trip reservoir

Green Canyon (Yesil Kanyon) is a different beast entirely. It is not a wild river but the reservoir formed behind the Oymapinar Dam, on the Manavgat river system. The dam holds back deep, calm, emerald-green water between tall canyon walls, and the classic way to experience it is a leisurely boat cruise.

A Green Canyon day is slow and scenic rather than active. You board a boat, drift past mirror-still water and forested cliffs, usually stop for a swim in the cool reservoir, and enjoy lunch on board. There are no rapids and no paddling required. It is a superb choice for those who want the canyon scenery without the physical effort, and it works well for older travellers, couples after a relaxed day, or anyone who would rather photograph the landscape than fight it. If that is the day you actually had in mind, our sister site sets out what a day on the Green Canyon reservoir actually involves.

How to choose

The decision really comes down to what kind of day you want:

One practical note: because the names sound alike, always confirm what your booking actually includes. A "canyon trip" from your hotel might mean a raft on the Koprucay or a boat on the Oymapinar reservoir, and those are very different experiences.

Getting there

Both lie inland from the Antalya coast, reached by winding mountain roads through pine forest. Rafting trips to Koprulu typically include hotel transfers, so you do not need to drive yourself; if you are staying nearby, our rafting from Side guide covers pickups and timings for that route. Green Canyon boat trips are usually sold with transfers too.

Whichever you choose, you are heading into some of the most beautiful protected landscape in the Taurus Mountains, so pack sun protection, water shoes and a sense of adventure.

Ready to feel the cold turquoise of the Koprucay rather than watch it from a boat deck? Take a look at our rafting tours and pick the day that fits your group.

Najczęstsze pytania

Are Koprulu Canyon and Green Canyon the same place?+

No. Koprulu Canyon is a national park with the Koprucay river, famous for rafting. Green Canyon is the calm reservoir behind the Oymapinar Dam, famous for relaxed boat trips. They are separate places near Manavgat.

Which is better for families with children?+

Both can suit families. Koprulu offers grade II-III rafting that is fun and not extreme, while Green Canyon is a calm boat cruise with a swim. Choose Koprulu for adventure and Green Canyon for a relaxed day.

Can you raft at Green Canyon?+

No. Green Canyon is a still reservoir behind a dam, so there is no white-water rafting there. Rafting happens on the fast-flowing Koprucay river in Koprulu Canyon.

Is Koprulu Canyon rafting suitable for beginners?+

Yes. The classic run is roughly 14 kilometres of grade II-III water, which is splashy and exciting but accessible to first-timers and reasonably fit families and groups.

What else is there to see in Koprulu Canyon?+

Beyond rafting, Koprulu Canyon has the Roman-era Oluk stone bridge over the Koprucay and the ancient ruins of Selge, including its famous theatre, up in the hills above the canyon.
