Mahmutlar sits right at the far-eastern edge of the Alanya area, which makes it one of the longer runs to the Koprucay river. If you want genuine grade II-III rapids, expect an early morning and a scenic drive of around two hours each way.
How far is Koprulu Canyon from Mahmutlar?
The Koprulu Canyon rafting base sits near Beskonak, on the Koprucay river inland from Manavgat. From Mahmutlar it is around two hours by road, since you are travelling the full length of the Alanya coast before turning north into the mountains. Guests in Kargicak are a touch further still; those over towards Okurcalar or Avsallar have a shorter run of roughly 1.25 to 1.5 hours.
We will not pretend Mahmutlar is close to the river. It is a proper full-day outing. What makes it work is the free hotel pickup and the fact that the drive itself is genuinely beautiful, climbing from the coast into pine forest and canyon country.
What the pickup and day actually look like
Because Mahmutlar is at the far end, your minibus pickup will be earlier than for guests nearer Side or Manavgat. We come to your hotel by minibus, gather other guests along the coast road, then head inland to the canyon. You will normally be back at your hotel in the late afternoon or early evening.
A few honest pointers for a smooth day:
- Be ready early and downstairs a little before your window opens; the driver has a long coastal route to complete.
- Bring a light layer for the mountain air and the cold snowmelt water, plus a towel and dry clothes for the ride home.
- Eat well the night before and pack water; the morning start comes quickly.
- Leave valuables at the hotel and bring only what you can secure while on the river.
Every raft has a trained guide, and all the technical gear, helmet, life jacket and paddle is provided at the base. The classic run is about 14 kilometres of grade II-III water, lively enough to be exciting but suitable for first-timers and families with older children. The season runs roughly from April to October.
Is the long transfer from Mahmutlar worth it?
For real whitewater, yes. The Koprucay is the genuine article, cold, fast and framed by dramatic canyon walls, and it is what we specialise in. Prefer something closer? Dim Cayi honestly
If two hours in a minibus sounds like a lot, there is a closer option near Alanya: the Dim Cayi, or Dim river. It is a calm, shaded valley with riverside restaurants on wooden platforms, and it is lovely for a relaxed, photo-friendly family day out. Be clear about what it is, though, it is a gentle float and a picnic setting, not real rapids.
If your goal is a scenic, easy day close to home, Dim Cayi is the honest answer. If you want the adrenaline of proper whitewater, only Koprulu Canyon delivers that, and the drive from Mahmutlar is the price of the real thing. Both are valid choices; it simply depends on the day you are after.
