Rafting Life Jackets and Helmets Explained: Your Safety Gear

If you cannot swim well, the thought of a river can feel daunting, but the two pieces of kit you are handed at the start are designed to do the worrying for you. On every rafting trip from Side your life jacket and helmet are compulsory, provided free, and are the reason nervous first-timers finish the day grinning.

What safety gear are you given?

Before you go anywhere near the water, the team fits you with two essential items: a buoyancy life jacket and a hard helmet. Both are included in your trip and there is nothing to buy or bring. On the Koprucay river, which flows through Koprulu Canyon National Park near Beskonak around one hour inland from the Side and Manavgat coast, wearing them is not optional. No jacket and helmet means no boat, and that rule applies to everyone from children to adults.

A trained guide also rides in every single raft. You are never left to work it out alone. The guide steers, calls the paddling and keeps a constant eye on the group, so the gear and the guide work together as one safety system.

How the life jacket keeps you safe

A rafting life jacket, sometimes called a buoyancy aid or PFD, is a snug foam vest that floats you. This is the key point for anyone anxious about swimming: the jacket does the floating for you. If you slip out of the raft, it turns you face-up and holds your head clear of the water while you bob along, giving you time to breathe, stay calm and let the guide reach you.

Because of this, you do not need to be a strong swimmer for the family route. The jacket floats you and the guide manages the raft. That single fact reassures more first-timers than anything else. The rapids on the classic run are grade II to III, which is genuinely beginner and family friendly, so the odds of an unplanned swim are low, and even if it happens the jacket has you covered.

Wearing your life jacket correctly

Fit is everything, so take a moment to get it right:

How the helmet protects you

The helmet guards your head against knocks from rocks, paddles or the side of the raft. On a lively river you are moving through a rocky canyon, and the occasional bump is normal. The helmet turns what could be a scare into a non-event.

Wearing your helmet correctly

A quick word on the water and the cold

The Koprucay is fed by mountain snowmelt, so the water stays cold and refreshing even in July and August. This is another reason the gear matters: the life jacket keeps you buoyant and the guide gets you back in the boat quickly, so a brief dip is exciting rather than a problem. Rapids run livelier in the spring snowmelt of April and May and gentler in high summer, but your safety kit is the same throughout the season, which runs from around April to the end of October.

Extra reassurance for first-timers

The family route usually welcomes children from around age six or seven, wearing correctly sized junior jackets and helmets. Free hotel pickup by minibus is standard, you head out in the morning and are back late afternoon or early evening. If you have a medical condition such as pregnancy, a back or heart complaint, or a disability, please check with the operator and your doctor before booking so they can advise you honestly.

Once you understand that the jacket floats you, the helmet shields you and a guide is always in the boat, the fear tends to melt away. Browse our other Antalya tours if you want to compare adventures first.

Ready to feel that confidence on the water? Book your rafting trip from Side and let the gear and your guide take care of the rest.

Najczęstsze pytania

Is the life jacket and helmet included, or do I pay extra?+

Both are provided free as part of your trip and are compulsory. There is nothing to buy or bring; the team fits you before you reach the water. For the current trip price, please check the live booking page.

Can non-swimmers go rafting?+

Yes on the family route. You do not need to be a strong swimmer because the life jacket floats you and holds your head clear of the water, and a trained guide manages the raft and is with you the whole time.

How should the life jacket fit?+

Snugly, with every buckle fastened. It should hug your torso and not slide up when the guide tugs the shoulders. If in doubt, ask the crew to tighten it; they are happy to adjust it.

Why do I need a helmet on a beginner river?+

You are moving through a rocky canyon, so a helmet guards your head against knocks from rocks, paddles or the raft. Wear it level, covering your forehead, with the chin strap firmly fastened.

Is it safe for children?+

The family route usually takes children from around age six or seven, wearing junior-sized jackets and helmets. If your child has any medical concern, please check with the operator and your doctor first.
