What to Expect From Your First Rapid on the Koprucay

Everyone remembers their first rapid. If you're feeling a flutter of nerves before your rafting day near Beskonak, that's completely normal - and by the end of the first splash it usually turns into a laugh.

The build-up: hearing it before you see it

Once you've had your kit and safety briefing at the riverside base camp, your guide pushes the raft out onto the calm green water of Koprulu Canyon. The first stretch is gentle, giving you time to settle into the rhythm of paddling together and get used to the cold, clear snowmelt of the Koprucay.

Then you hear it. A soft roar drifting up the canyon, growing louder as the current quickens beneath you. The water ahead breaks into white, tumbling over rocks. Your stomach might do a little flip - that's the anticipation, and it's part of the fun.

What your guide does

This is the moment your trained guide takes charge. Sitting at the back of the raft, they read the water, line up the best route through, and call clear commands - usually a firm "forward paddle!" to drive you into the rapid with momentum. You're never guessing. You simply follow the call, and the whole raft moves as one.

The splash: three seconds of pure joy

Then you're in it. The nose of the raft dips, cold water leaps up over the sides, and for a few seconds everything is spray, noise and adrenaline. You bounce over the waves, the raft flexing under you, everyone shrieking and grinning at once.

Here's the reassuring truth: the rapids on the Koprucay are grade II-III. That means they're lively and splashy but genuinely beginner and family friendly - a world away from the terrifying drops you might picture. You bob through, not down. Your helmet and life jacket are on and compulsory, the jacket floats you effortlessly, and your guide has run this river countless times. Even if you can't swim, the family route is designed so the jacket does the work for you.

What if I fall out?

It's uncommon on these grades, and it isn't the disaster nervous first-timers imagine. If anyone goes in, the life jacket brings you straight to the surface, you float feet-first downstream, and the guide has you back in the raft within moments. It's covered in your briefing, so you'll know exactly what to do.

The calm after: the best part nobody mentions

Almost as quickly as it started, the white water releases you into a wide, quiet pool. The roar fades behind you. The raft glides. And you look around at your soaked, beaming crew and realise - that was brilliant, and you want to do it again.

These calm stretches between the rapids are the secret magic of Koprulu Canyon. Towering pine-clad walls rise on either side, the water turns a deep emerald, and there's usually a mid-river swim or float stop where you can slip into the cool river and drift for a while. By the time the next rapid arrives, your nerves are long gone and you're actively looking forward to it.

How the day fits together

The classic run is around 14 km, with a shorter family-friendly option of roughly 12 km, so you'll paddle through several rapids over around 3-4 hours on the river - plenty of build-ups, splashes and calm pools to fall in love with. A full day usually includes free hotel pickup, the scenic drive up from the coast (around an hour inland from Side and Manavgat), your kit and briefing, the paddle, a riverside lunch, and the drive back in the late afternoon or early evening.

If you're coming from the resorts, our rafting day from Side covers pickup, the guided run and everything in between. You can compare the full and family routes on our tours page and pick the one that suits your group.

First rapids are made for first-timers. Come nervous, leave grinning - book your Koprulu Canyon rafting day from Side and feel it for yourself.
