Here's the thing most first-timers get wrong about rafting in Antalya: the air temperature and the water temperature are two completely different stories. You can be baking in 38°C sunshine on the drive up, then plunge your paddle into water that feels like it came out of a fridge. That contrast is exactly what makes a summer rafting day in the Köprülü Canyon so addictive — but it also means a little planning pays off.
This guide breaks down what to actually expect from the weather and the river, month by month, so you can pick the right day and the right tour.
Why the water is so cold (even in July)
The rivers we raft are spring-fed and canyon-shaded. The water in Köprülü Canyon and Tazı Canyon comes largely from cold mountain springs, then runs through deep, shaded gorges before it reaches you. So while the Mediterranean coast bakes, the river stays cool to genuinely cold all season — often somewhere in the mid-teens Celsius even at the height of summer.
Good news: that cold shock is short, and it's part of the fun. On a 30-plus-degree day, splashing through cold rapids is the most refreshing thing you'll do all holiday.
Air vs water: what changes month by month
Our season runs roughly April to October. Here's how the two temperatures behave across it.
April – May (spring: high, lively water)
Snowmelt and spring rain feed the rivers, so the water is at its highest and most energetic — great for rapids, and the coolest of the season. Air is pleasant rather than hot (often low-to-mid 20s°C). You'll feel the cold more, so this is peak wetsuit season. Fewer crowds, greenest canyon scenery.
June – August (summer: hot air, cold water, peak fun)
This is the classic combo. Air soars into the 30s and sometimes 40°C, the water is still cold, and that clash is the whole appeal. Water levels are lower and calmer than spring, which makes the Köprülü Canyon run (Class II–III) perfect for families and first-timers. Sunny, reliable, warm enough to dry off in minutes.
September – October (autumn: warm, calm, comfortable)
Air stays warm and summery well into October, water is at its most comfortable of the year, and the crowds thin out. A lovely, relaxed time to raft. Toward late October the season winds down.
Do I need a wetsuit?
For the classic Köprülü Canyon Class II–III run in high summer, most people are fine without one — you get splashed, not submerged, and the sun dries you fast. That said:
- Spring (April–May): a wetsuit is genuinely worth it — high, cold water and cooler air.
- Tazı Canyon (Class IV–V, extreme): the wilder, steeper water means more time in it, so cold protection matters more.
- Kids and anyone who feels the cold: a wetsuit turns a slightly shivery run into pure fun.
Wetsuits are available where needed. What's always included on every tour is your helmet, buoyancy vest, safety briefing, licensed guide and insurance — the essentials are covered no matter the month. And because non-swimmers are welcome (vest plus guide), the water temperature is really about comfort, not safety.
Does rafting run in the rain?
Usually, yes. A bit of rain doesn't change much — you're getting wet anyway, and light rain rarely affects a Köprülü Canyon trip. What matters is river conditions, not the sky: guides monitor water levels and only pause a tour if flow becomes genuinely unsafe, which is rare. Because you reserve free online and pay on the tour day, there's no financial risk in booking ahead — if conditions ever force a change, nothing is lost.
So what are the best conditions?
It depends on what you want:
- Biggest thrill / wildest water: April–May, and consider Tazı Canyon (Class IV–V) for the extreme end.
- Best all-round family day: June–September on the gentler Köprülü Canyon (Class II–III), warm air, calmer water.
- Warmest, calmest, least crowded: September–October.
Whatever the month, mornings are usually cooler and quieter; midday brings the hottest air (and the most welcome cold splash).
What to bring, whatever the weather
- Swimwear worn under clothes and a towel + a dry change of clothes.
- Secure water shoes or sandals that stay on your feet.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses with a strap — the sun is strong even when the water is cold.
- A little cash or card, since you pay on the day.
Leave phones and valuables in the vehicle or a dry bag — hands stay on the paddle.
