Koprulu Canyon sits inland from the coast, so the first question most people ask isn't about the rapids at all - it's how on earth they'll get there. The good news: it's simpler than it looks, and for most guests it costs nothing extra.
Where Koprulu Canyon actually is
The rafting takes place on the Koprucay river as it runs through Koprulu Canyon National Park, near the village of Beskonak. The launch area is around 50 km inland from the Side-Manavgat coast - roughly an hour's drive up into the pine forest and hills. Manavgat is the closest coastal town, and the road climbs steadily inland from there towards Beskonak.
It is not somewhere you stumble across by accident, which is exactly why the transfer question matters so much. Once you know your options, the logistics stop being a worry and the day is just... a great day out.
Option 1: The free organised transfer (recommended)
By a wide margin, the easiest way to get to Koprulu Canyon is the organised hotel pickup that comes included with a rafting booking. A driver collects you from your hotel or a nearby meeting point in the morning, drives you up to the canyon in an air-conditioned minibus, and brings you back in the late afternoon or early evening. You don't touch a map, a car park or a fuel gauge all day.
Why we recommend it for almost everyone:
- No navigation: the canyon road is scenic but winding, and the last stretch to Beskonak is unfamiliar territory. Let someone who drives it daily handle it.
- No parking or cost surprises: no rental, no fuel, no wondering where to leave the car.
- You can relax on the way home: after a few hours on cold snowmelt water and a riverside lunch, nobody wants to drive an hour back down the mountain.
- It's usually already in the price: free pickup is bundled with the trip, so choosing it rarely costs you anything extra.
Pickup is in the morning and you're back late afternoon or early evening - we don't quote an exact clock time because it depends on your hotel's location on the run and the day's schedule. Your confirmation will give you the window.
Option 2: Driving yourself
Self-driving is a perfectly reasonable choice if you already have a hire car and enjoy being on your own timetable. The route is straightforward on paper: head to Manavgat, then follow the signs inland towards Beskonak and Koprulu Canyon National Park. The scenery on the climb is genuinely lovely.
Be honest with yourself about the trade-offs, though. The final section is a narrow, twisting mountain road, parking near the launch points can be tight in high season, and you'll be driving back tired after the rafting. If you're set on driving, build in extra time and don't rush the descent.
Approximate drive times by region
All times are rough guides for a normal-traffic day - treat them as "around", not to the minute:
- Manavgat: around 45 minutes to an hour (closest town).
- Side, Kumkoy, Sorgun, Colakli: around an hour.
- Belek: around an hour.
- Antalya: around an hour and a quarter.
- Alanya: around an hour and a half to two hours.
- Kemer: around one and three-quarter hours to two hours.
If you're staying anywhere along the Side-Manavgat coast, you're in the sweet spot - close enough that the transfer is quick and the day never feels like a slog.
A quick word on booking direct
However you travel, book the rafting itself directly with the operator rather than through your hotel rep or an OTA like Viator or GetYourGuide. Those middlemen add a commission on top, which is why the direct price is typically lower for the identical trip. Booking direct also means the pickup arrangement is sorted between you and the people actually running the day - no messages lost in translation. See live availability and prices on our rafting from your resort page, and browse the full range on our tours list.
What's included once you arrive
The classic run is about 14 km of grade II-III water - lively enough to be exciting, gentle enough to be family friendly. A qualified guide rides in every raft, all the gear (helmet, life jacket, paddle) is provided, and the season runs roughly April to October. The water is cold mountain snowmelt, so it's refreshing even in the height of summer.
