Short answer: Alanya is not on the doorstep of Köprülü Canyon, but it isn't a deal-breaker either. Expect around 1.5 to 2 hours each way, and a full, early day if the rapids are what you're after.
How far is Alanya from Köprülü Canyon really?
Köprülü Canyon rafting runs on the Köprücay river near Beşkonak, inland from the Side-Manavgat coast. Alanya sits well to the east, so the journey is longer than most brochures let on. From the western Alanya resorts like Okurcalar and Avsallar it's roughly 1.25 to 1.5 hours; from the town centre and the far eastern suburbs of Mahmutlar and Kargıcak it stretches to around 2 hours.
Free hotel pickup by minibus is still offered from these resorts, which removes the driving and parking headache entirely. The trade-off is an earlier start and a later return, so treat it as a proper day out rather than a quick morning trip.
When the drive is worth it
If you want genuine white water, the answer is simple: yes, it's worth it. Köprülü Canyon is the real thing, a classic 14 km run through grade II-III rapids on cold mountain snowmelt, with a trained guide in every raft and all the gear provided. The season runs roughly from April to October.
The drive is worth it when:
- You specifically want proper rapids, not a gentle float.
- You're happy to commit a full day and start early.
- You want the logistics handled by free pickup rather than driving yourself.
- You'd like to pair rafting with the canyon scenery, riverside lunch and a swim.
Because you're travelling further, it pays to plan properly. Our guide to rafting from Alanya covers pickup areas, timing and what to bring so the longer day runs smoothly.
When the closer, gentler Dim Çayı makes more sense
Alanya has its own river much nearer to hand: the Dim Çayı, just a short drive inland from the town. It's a lovely spot, but be clear on what it is. Dim Çayı is a calm, cool, family-and-photo style float with riverside restaurants built over the water. It is not white-water rafting.
Pick Dim Çayı instead of Köprülü Canyon when:
- You're travelling with very young children or nervous swimmers.
- You want a relaxed half-day close to your hotel, not a full expedition.
- Calm water, cold-river swimming and a leisurely lunch appeal more than rapids.
Put simply: if you want scenery and a gentle splash, Dim Çayı is closer and easier. If you want the adrenaline of real rapids, Köprülü Canyon is the one to make the trip for.
Making the long day work
A few honest pointers if you book from Alanya. Set out expecting a morning departure, since the far resorts leave earlier to reach the river in good time. You'll usually be back in the late afternoon or early evening. Bring a change of clothes, a towel, secure footwear that can get wet, and sun protection. Everything technical, from raft to helmet and life jacket, is provided.
Booking direct is also worth doing. Hotel reps and online marketplaces add their own margin, so arranging your trip straight with the operator generally works out better on price and clarity. We never quote a fixed figure here because the live price and any current offers are what count.
The verdict
Alanya isn't too far for Köprülü Canyon, but it is a longer, earlier day than from Side or Manavgat. If you're set on real grade II-III rapids, the drive rewards you and free pickup takes the hassle out of it. If you'd rather stay close and keep it gentle, the Dim Çayı is your calmer alternative.
