If you're planning a winter break in Antalya and dreaming of a splash down the rapids, here's the honest answer straight away: rafting in Koprulu Canyon does not run in the cold winter months.
We'd love to say yes, but the truth serves you better than a disappointing surprise on the day. Below we explain exactly why the season pauses, when it starts again, and the adventures that are waiting for you if you're visiting between roughly November and March.
So, can you go rafting in Antalya in winter?
No, not during the deep winter months. Rafting on the Koprucay river through Koprulu Canyon National Park runs roughly from April to the end of October. Outside that window the tours simply do not operate, and no reputable operator will put you on the water.
The canyon sits near Beskonak, around 50 km and about one hour inland from the Side and Manavgat coast. It's a beautiful mountain setting, but in winter that same mountain landscape is exactly what makes rafting unsafe.
Why doesn't rafting run in the cold months?
There are a few very practical reasons the river takes a rest over winter:
- The water is too high and fast. Winter rain and early snowmelt in the Taurus Mountains swell the Koprucay well beyond the friendly grade II-III rapids that make it so family friendly in season. High, powerful water is a different, riskier river altogether.
- It's simply too cold. The Koprucay is fed by mountain snowmelt and stays genuinely cold even in July and August. In winter, combined with cold air and the risk of getting wet, it becomes uncomfortable and unsafe rather than refreshing.
- Conditions are unpredictable. Safe family rafting relies on stable, well-understood water levels. Winter brings sudden surges that no guide can reliably plan around.
In short, the very thing that makes spring and summer rafting so enjoyable, a lively but manageable river, is missing in winter. Rather than water you down, a good operator closes the season and reopens when it's genuinely safe.
When does the rafting season start again?
The season generally begins in April and runs to the end of October. The river is at its liveliest in the spring snowmelt of April and May, when the rapids are more energetic. High summer is gentler and warmer, which many families prefer, especially with younger children on the shorter family route (usually from about age 6-7).
If your heart is set on rafting, aim for a trip between late spring and early autumn. You'll find the classic run of around 14 km, or a shorter family option of about 12 km, both with a trained guide in every raft and a helmet and life jacket provided and compulsory. The life jacket floats you, so you don't need to be a strong swimmer for the family route. You can see the full range of trips on our tours page once the season opens.
What can you do instead in winter?
Antalya in winter is mild, quiet and often sunny, and there's still plenty of adventure and culture to enjoy while the river rests:
- Explore the canyon on foot. Koprulu Canyon and its historic Roman bridge are stunning to walk and photograph out of season, with cool, clear air and far fewer visitors.
- Discover ancient sites. Nearby Aspendos, Perge and Side's own ancient ruins are wonderful in winter, with comfortable walking temperatures and quiet, atmospheric streets.
- Head for the mountains. The Taurus range even offers snow and skiing at higher altitudes, a striking contrast to the mild coast just an hour away.
- Relax and plan ahead. Winter is the perfect time to enjoy Turkish hospitality, a traditional hammam, and to plan your rafting adventure for your next visit.
It's a season for a different pace, and one many travellers come to love. Browse our full range of seasonal adventures on our tours page to see what suits the time of your stay.
Planning ahead is the best approach
If rafting is a must for your holiday, the simplest advice is to time your visit for the April to October window and book with confidence. And if you're here in winter, embrace what the region does beautifully in the quieter months, then come back for the river when it's roaring safely again.
