Koprulu Canyon Rafting Route: Every Rapid on the Koprucay, Explained

Most people book a rafting day without any real picture of where the river takes them. Here is the whole ~14 km run down the Koprucay through Koprulu Canyon, from the put-in near Beskonak to the final take-out.

Where the Koprulu Canyon rafting route begins

The day starts long before the water. After a morning hotel pickup along the Side-Manavgat coast and a drive of around an hour inland, you reach the base camp near Beskonak. This is where you change, collect your helmet and life jacket, and gather for the safety briefing where your guide explains the paddle commands and how to sit, hold on and float feet-first if you happen to go for a swim.

The put-in sits on the Koprucay itself, a snowmelt river that stays genuinely cold even at the height of summer. That first shock of cold water on your hands is part of the fun. Once everyone is aboard, six to eight guests plus a trained guide who steers from the back, you push off into the gentle current and the canyon opens up ahead.

Down the river: rapids, pools and the rhythm of the run

The Koprulu Canyon rafting route is not a wall-to-wall whitewater assault. It is a rhythm. Lively grade II-III rapids, beginner and family friendly, are spaced out by long stretches of calm green pools where the paddling eases off and you can look up at the pine-clad canyon walls rising on either side.

In the rapids the guide calls the strokes and the raft bounces through standing waves and around boulders, throwing spray over the bow. Everyone gets soaked, everyone laughs, and then the river settles again. In spring the snowmelt runs higher and the rapids feel livelier; by late summer the flow is gentler and the pools warmer to the eye. Between the drops you drift past turquoise water so clear you can see the riverbed, with kingfishers and the occasional turtle for company.

The Roman bridge and the canyon's history

One of the quiet highlights comes when you round a bend and glide beneath a graceful stone arch. This is the old Roman bridge that has spanned the Koprucay for centuries, and floating under it is a reminder that this gorge has been a crossing point for a very long time. It is the kind of moment a coach tour rushes past but a raft lets you drink in from the water itself.

The mid-river swim stop

Roughly midway, in a calm and safe stretch, the guides usually pull the rafts together for a swim and float stop. You can slip out of the boat, let the life jacket carry you, and drift downstream in the cool water, or simply hang off the raft if you would rather stay put. No swimming ability is needed for the family route, the jacket floats you, so nervous first-timers can relax and enjoy it.

The take-out and the way home

After the final calm stretch the river delivers you to the take-out, having covered around 14 km in total, roughly three to four hours of on-and-off paddling depending on the water level. A shorter family option of around 12 km is available for younger children or anyone who wants a gentler day. From there it is back to base camp to change into dry clothes, followed by lunch at the riverside restaurant with the sound of the water still in your ears. Then the coach carries you back to your hotel, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

If you are staying on the coast, the easiest way to join this exact route is a day trip that handles the pickup, kit, guide and lunch for you. See how a rafting day from the coast works on our rafting from Side page, and browse the wider range of adventures on our tours overview.

Frequently Asked

How long is the Koprulu Canyon rafting route?+

The classic run down the Koprucay is around 14 km, with a shorter family option of about 12 km. On the water it works out to roughly three to four hours of on-and-off paddling, depending on the water level.

How difficult are the rapids on the route?+

The Koprucay is graded II-III, which is beginner and family friendly. You get lively bouncy rapids separated by long calm pools, rather than continuous heavy whitewater, and the guide steers and calls every stroke.

Do you really pass a Roman bridge?+

Yes. Partway down the route the river carries you beneath an old Roman stone bridge that has crossed the Koprucay for centuries, one of the quiet highlights you only truly appreciate from the water.

Is there a stop to swim during the run?+

Usually, yes. Roughly midway, in a calm and safe stretch, the guides pause for a swim and float stop so you can drift in the cool water with your life jacket on, or simply stay in the raft if you prefer.

Do I need to swim to do the family route?+

No. The compulsory life jacket floats you, so no swimming ability is required for the family route. Nervous first-timers and children who cannot swim can enjoy the day safely.
