Alanya sits at the far eastern end of the Antalya coast, so rafting on the Köprüçay river is a proper day out rather than a quick hop. We'll be straight with you about the drive, the early start and why, for real grade II-III rapids, it's still worth doing.
The honest distance: Alanya to Köprülü Canyon
Köprülü Canyon rafting takes place on the cold, snowmelt-fed Köprüçay river near Beşkonak, inland from the Side-Manavgat corridor. From the Alanya area that's around 1.5 to 2 hours each way by road, depending on exactly where your hotel is.
- Okurcalar and Avsallar, at the western edge, are the closest, at roughly 1.25 to 1.5 hours.
- Central Alanya and Konaklı sit at around 1.5 to 1.75 hours.
- Mahmutlar and Kargıcak, the far eastern resorts, are the longest run at close to 2 hours.
We won't pretend Alanya is close to the canyon, because it isn't. But the river genuinely is the best whitewater on this coast, and the free pickup means you don't have to think about the logistics yourself.
Free hotel pickup, handled for you
Free minibus pickup is still offered from Alanya hotels. A guide-driven minibus collects you from your hotel or a nearby meeting point, so there's no hire car, no navigating and no parking to worry about. Because the drive is longer from this end of the coast, pickup is earlier than it would be from Side or Manavgat, and you'll be back mid to late afternoon or early evening.
Plan for a full day out. Bring water, sun protection and something for the journey, and expect a comfort stop or two along the way. It's a scenic inland drive that climbs gently towards the pine-covered canyon.
Why the longer day is worth it
The classic Köprülü Canyon run covers around 14 kilometres of the Köprüçay, with a professional guide in every raft and all the gear, including helmet, life jacket and paddle, provided. The rapids are genuine grade II-III: lively and fun, cold from the mountain snowmelt, but well suited to first-timers and families with older children.
The season runs roughly from April to October. Early season carries more water and a stronger current from the spring melt, while high summer is warmer and gentler, so there's a good run whenever you visit. For most Alanya guests, a couple of hours in the minibus is a fair trade for a morning on real whitewater in one of Turkey's most beautiful canyons. You can see the full range of trips on our tours page, and everything specific to your resort is on our rafting from Alanya page.
The closer, gentler option: Dim Çayı
If a two-hour drive doesn't appeal, there is a much closer alternative near Alanya: the Dim river, or Dim Çayı. It's only a short trip from the city, set in a pretty valley of riverside restaurants with tables in the shallows.
Be clear about what it is, though. Dim Çayı is a calm, family and photo-style float on flat water, not real whitewater. There are no rapids to speak of. It's lovely for a relaxed afternoon, but if you've come for the adrenaline of proper rafting, it won't scratch that itch. Köprülü Canyon is the genuine article, and it's what we specialise in.
Which should you choose?
Keep it simple:
- Want real grade II-III rapids and a guided raft on a proper river? Choose Köprülü Canyon and accept the longer, earlier day, with free pickup handling the drive.
- Want something calm, close and easy, with young children or grandparents in tow? Dim Çayı near Alanya is the gentle choice.
For most people who describe themselves as wanting to "go rafting", it's Köprülü Canyon they're picturing, and the transfer is a small price for the real thing.
