As the summer heat softens, autumn quietly becomes one of the loveliest times to raft through Koprulu Canyon. Fewer crowds, gentle water and warm afternoons make September and October a favourite window for families in the know.
Why autumn rafting in Antalya is so special
By late season the Koprucay river, which flows through Koprulu Canyon National Park near Beskonak, has settled into its calmest mood of the year. The spring snowmelt that made April and May so lively has long passed, so the rapids sit comfortably at the gentler end of grade II-III. That makes autumn rafting in Antalya an excellent choice for first-timers, nervous paddlers and younger children on the family route.
The canyon itself is around 50 km, or roughly one hour inland from the Side-Manavgat coast, and the change of season transforms the scenery. The harsh midsummer glare gives way to softer, golden light, and the pine-clad canyon walls feel cooler and greener. It is a genuinely beautiful time to be on the water.
What actually changes late in the season
Three things shift noticeably once September and October arrive:
- Calmer water: the flow is at its gentlest, so the ride is smooth and family-friendly rather than adrenaline-heavy.
- Thinner crowds: the peak-summer rush fades once schools reopen across Europe, so rafts are less busy and the canyon feels more peaceful.
- Milder air: warm, pleasant afternoons replace the fierce midsummer heat, which makes the whole day more comfortable, especially for older guests and children.
One thing does not change: the water. The Koprucay is fed by cold mountain snowmelt all year, so even in September and October the river runs refreshingly chilly. That first splash is bracing whatever the month, which most people find part of the fun.
The last weeks before the river closes
The rafting season runs roughly from April to the end of October. Once winter arrives the river becomes too high and cold to run safely, and tours stop until spring. That makes autumn the final chance of the year to experience the canyon, so if you are holidaying on the coast in September or October, it is well worth booking before the season closes.
Because late-autumn dates can sell out or wind down as October ends, we always recommend checking availability early. You can see current departures and options on our tours page.
Is autumn rafting suitable for families?
Very much so. The family route, usually from around age 6-7, is calmer still and pairs beautifully with the gentle autumn water. A trained guide rides in every single raft, steering and giving clear instructions the whole way, and a helmet and life jacket are compulsory and provided for everyone on board.
You do not need to be a strong swimmer for the family route. Your life jacket keeps you buoyant, so the emphasis is on holding on, following your guide and enjoying the scenery. For younger children or anyone with a health concern, do confirm suitability directly with the operator, and check with your doctor where relevant, before you book.
What to bring in September and October
The essentials stay simple. Wear a swimsuit under quick-dry clothes, bring a towel and a full change of dry clothes for the journey back, and pack secure footwear such as strap sandals or old trainers that can get wet. In autumn a light layer for afterwards is a good idea, as evenings can cool once the sun drops behind the canyon. Leave valuables at your hotel.
Getting there from the coast
Most tours include free hotel pickup by minibus, so you do not need a car or complicated planning. Pickup is in the morning and you are usually back by late afternoon or early evening, leaving the rest of your day free. We never post exact clock times because they depend on your hotel's location, but your operator will confirm your window when you book.
If you are staying around Side, our dedicated rafting from Side page covers pickups, timings and everything specific to that stretch of coast.
