If you've been putting off booking a rafting trip because you're worried you're too big, too unfit or simply too old, please relax. Rafting the Koprucay river through Koprulu Canyon is one of the most inclusive adventures near the Side-Manavgat coast, and following your guide matters far more than how you look in a life jacket.
Every year the rafts fill up with everyday holidaymakers of every shape and size. This is a beginner- and family-friendly run, not an athletic test, and the vast majority of guests finish beaming from ear to ear.
Is there really a weight limit for rafting in Antalya?
There is no single strict weight number that fits every operator, and honestly, weight alone is rarely the deciding factor. What matters more is that you can sit safely in the raft, hold on where your guide asks, and follow simple instructions. The rafts are sturdy inflatable boats built to carry a full crew of adults, so being a larger guest is not the barrier people fear.
The one practical point worth knowing is that life jackets and helmets come in a range of sizes, but every operator's stock has limits. If you are a very tall or very broad guest, it is kind to yourself and sensible to mention this when you book, so the team can make sure the right kit is ready for you. That's not about judgement, it's simply about a jacket that fits doing its job properly.
How fit do you actually need to be?
Far less fit than you'd imagine. On the classic run of around 14 km, and the gentler family route of around 12 km, the raft does most of the work and the current carries you along. You will paddle in bursts when your guide calls for it, and you'll brace and hold on through the livelier grade II-III rapids, but there are calm stretches in between where you can catch your breath and enjoy the canyon scenery.
You do not need to be a strong swimmer for the family route. Everyone wears a compulsory life jacket that floats you, a trained guide rides in every single raft, and the guide manages the boat through each rapid. The water is genuine snowmelt and stays cold even in July and August, which is refreshing rather than something to fear.
What actually helps on the water
- Listening to your guide — the single most important thing, far ahead of muscle.
- Being able to hold on — a firm grip when the guide says brace.
- Getting in and out of the raft — a bit of a step and a wobble, nothing more.
- A willingness to get wet — the cold splash is half the fun.
Advice for larger and older guests
Larger guests raft happily every single day, and a bit of extra weight can even make you feel more planted and stable in the boat. Older guests are just as welcome; plenty of people well into their sixties and beyond enjoy the family route, where the pace is gentler and the rapids more forgiving. Spring snowmelt in April and May makes the water livelier, while high summer runs are calmer, so if you'd prefer a gentler ride the later, hotter months are your friend.
If you carry a health condition — a bad back, a heart condition, reduced mobility, or if you are pregnant — please be honest with yourself and get proper advice. Rafting involves sudden jolts, bracing and cold water, so we'd always ask you to check with your doctor and to tell the operator about your condition before you book. The team would far rather have that conversation early than see you uncomfortable on the river, and they can advise whether the calmer family route or a different day out suits you better.
The family route versus the classic run
The family option, at around 12 km, usually takes children from about age 6 to 7 and keeps to the gentler water. It's ideal for mixed groups, nervous first-timers and anyone who wants the scenery without the biggest splashes. The classic 14 km run gives you a little more of everything. Both include the same reassuring safety setup: compulsory helmet, life jacket and a guide in your raft.
Free hotel pickup by minibus is standard, so there's no driving or logistics to worry about. You'll be collected in the morning for the roughly one-hour, around 50 km journey inland to Beskonak, and back to your hotel by late afternoon or early evening.
