Ask any local guide when the Koprucay river runs at its liveliest and the answer is the same: spring, when the Taurus snowmelt pours down into Koprulu Canyon. If you want the biggest water of the year, April and May are the months to book.
What snowmelt means for the Koprucay
The Koprucay is fed by the high Taurus mountains that rise behind the Antalya coast. Through winter, snow builds up on those peaks. When the weather warms in spring, that snow melts and drains straight into the river system, swelling the Koprucay through Koprulu Canyon National Park near Beskonak, around 50 km and roughly one hour inland from the Side-Manavgat coast.
This is what snowmelt Koprucay rafting is all about. More water in the channel means faster current, fuller rapids and a genuinely more exciting ride. The grade II-III rapids that make this river so beginner and family friendly become that little bit punchier and more playful in the peak of the melt.
Why April is the wildest month
April sits right in the sweet spot of the snowmelt. The days have warmed enough for the mountain snow to release in earnest, and the river is often at its highest of the whole season. Ride down the canyon in April and you will feel a stronger push through the rapids, more spray over the bow and a real sense of the mountains flowing through the boat with you.
May keeps much of that energy while the air and water warm a touch further. By high summer the melt has largely finished, the flow settles and the run becomes gentler - still a wonderful day out, and often the better choice for very young children or nervous first-timers, but calmer than the spring peak.
A word on the water temperature
Here is the honest catch: snowmelt is cold. The Koprucay stays refreshingly chilly even in July and August, and in April and May it is properly cold. That crisp mountain water is part of the adventure, but it does mean you will notice the splashes. Wear quick-drying clothes, bring a change for afterwards, and embrace it.
Is the wilder water still safe for families?
Yes. Even at the spring peak, the Koprucay is a grade II-III river, which sits firmly in the beginner and family bracket. A trained guide rides in every single raft and steers you through each rapid, and a helmet and life jacket are compulsory and provided for everyone on board. The life jacket floats you, so you do not need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy the family route.
The classic run is around 14 km, with a shorter family option of about 12 km that usually welcomes children from around age six or seven. If you are travelling with younger children or anyone unsure about the livelier spring flow, ask our team when you book and confirm any child-health questions with the operator and, where relevant, a doctor. You can see the current routes and options on our rafting tours page.
Planning your spring rafting day
The rafting season on the Koprucay runs roughly from April to the end of October; in winter the river is too high and cold and tours do not operate. For the wildest water, target April and early May. For calmer, warmer conditions with the gentlest rapids, choose July or August.
Getting there is easy. Free hotel pickup by minibus collects you in the morning, and you are back at your hotel by late afternoon or early evening, so a rafting day slots neatly into a beach holiday without eating up your whole trip. We never quote an exact pickup time in advance because it depends on your hotel and the day's schedule - our team confirms the details with you directly.
