Kaleiçi is the beating historic heart of Antalya — a walled old town where narrow, cobbled lanes wind past restored Ottoman timber houses, courtyard cafes and boutique hotels, all sloping gently down to a picture-perfect Roman harbour. Layer upon layer of history is stacked here: Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman civilisations each left their mark, and today you can feel all of them in a single afternoon's stroll. It is romantic, walkable and endlessly photogenic, which makes it the natural base for exploring the wider Antalya coast.
Kaleiçi means "inside the castle," and the old town still sits within the line of its ancient defensive walls. The grand entrance is Hadrian's Gate (Üçkapılar), a beautifully preserved three-arched marble gateway built to honour the Roman Emperor Hadrian's visit in the 2nd century AD. Passing beneath it, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, is one of the most atmospheric moments of any visit.
From there the skyline is defined by the Yivli (Fluted) Minaret, a fluted, red-brick Seljuk tower that has become the symbol of Antalya. Nearby stands the Kesik Minaret (the "Broken Minaret"), a building whose walls tell an extraordinary story — it has served in turn as a Roman temple, a Byzantine church and an Ottoman mosque. At the town's western edge, the cylindrical Hıdırlık Tower overlooks the sea and the Konyaaltı direction; its terrace and the adjacent Karaalioğlu Park are the classic spot to watch the sun set behind the Taurus Mountains.
At the foot of Kaleiçi lies the horseshoe-shaped Roman harbour, once the main port of ancient Antalya and now a marina full of gulets and excursion boats. It's the departure point for coastal cruises and simply a lovely place to sit with a coffee. Back up in the lanes, the town comes alive after dark: the Ottoman timber houses have been lovingly converted into boutique hotels, restaurants and bars, and the old bazaar streets are full of carpet shops, jewellers and local craft stalls. Don't rush — half the pleasure of Kaleiçi is getting lost in it.
Kaleiçi itself is built on cliffs above the sea, with small platforms and swimming spots at the harbour. For proper sand and pebbles, Konyaaltı Beach stretches west of the centre beneath the mountains, while the Blue-Flag Lara Beach lies to the east. Both are an easy taxi or tram ride away. Just outside the city, the tumbling Düden Waterfalls — including the famous lower falls that plunge straight into the sea — are a favourite half-day escape.
Kaleiçi is perfectly placed for excursions, and the standout day trip is white-water rafting in the Taurus canyons. Within easy reach of Antalya, the Köprülü Canyon offers exhilarating but family-friendly rapids (Class II–III) on cold, crystal-clear mountain water, framed by pine forest and an ancient Roman bridge. Adrenaline seekers can step up to the Tazı Canyon, home to steeper, more technical extreme rafting (Class IV–V).
Our rafting day tours from Antalya include free hotel pickup right from Kaleiçi and the surrounding area, so you can be on the river within a couple of hours of breakfast. Prices start from just €20, with guides, gear and insurance all included, and you pay on the tour day. Browse the full range of day tours, compare the gentler white-water trips with the wilder extreme runs, or save with a rafting-and-more combo that pairs the river with a jeep safari or zipline.
The best time to visit Kaleiçi is spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October), when the weather is warm but the lanes aren't crowded — conveniently, this also overlaps the rafting season, which runs roughly April to October. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles, explore on foot (Kaleiçi is closed to most traffic), and use Antalya's tram or a short taxi to reach the beaches. Spend your days on culture and coast, and give one morning to the mountains — a rafting trip from Kaleiçi is the single most memorable way to see the wild side of Antalya.
Trade the sunbed for one unforgettable day on the water. Free hotel transfer, pay on the day, from €20.
